Dr. Joseph Merkel is a double-board-certified child, adolescent, and adult psychiatrist serving patients from early childhood through adulthood at Mind Study Center in Pasadena, California. He provides individualized psychiatric evaluation and medication management for children, adolescents, and adults, with particular clinical expertise in Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD), neurodevelopmental conditions, anxiety-related disorders (including OCD), school-based mental health, and psychiatric care for Veterans and military families.
Before becoming a physician, Dr. Merkel served as an Army Nurse Corps officer based at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, treating American and NATO military personnel and their families. During this time he had the unique experience of working as a flight nurse conducting pediatric aeromedical evacuation missions across Europe, Africa, and East Asia. After his time in Europe, he completed his Army service at Fort Cavazos in Texas before going on to work as a pediatric and maternity travel nurse at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford. He then completed medical school at the University of Queensland Ochsner Clinical School and his psychiatric training at the University at Buffalo. His diverse background in acute care, bedside nursing, trauma, child development, and family systems continues to shape his broad clinical perspective.
Dr. Merkel’s approach is collaborative, individualized, and systems-oriented. He works closely with patients, families, therapists, educators, pediatricians, and other healthcare providers to understand the full context of each patient’s life. His medication management visits are therapy-informed, and he pays close attention not only to symptoms but also to the supports and stressors affecting daily life. His goal is to help families move from frustration and repeated partial explanations toward a clearer understanding of their child’s needs and more effective support. He believes meaningful progress is not always about trying harder, but about trying differently.
Dr. Merkel has developed a special clinical interest in Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, a group of neurodevelopmental conditions that can overlap with ADHD, anxiety, mood disorders, learning differences, trauma-related symptoms, and behavioral challenges. He has provided education on FASD to psychiatry trainees, school teams, and outpatient mental health clinicians, and has been involved in grant-supported work with Buffalo Public Schools.
Dr. Merkel has extensive experience in school-based mental health consultation, including collaboration with educators, school psychologists, special education teams, and community programs. He understands the practical importance of IEPs, 504 plans, school accommodations, teacher support, and clear communication between clinical and educational systems.
As an Army Veteran, Dr. Merkel has a personal and professional interest in caring for Veterans and military families. He understands the culture of military service and the challenges that can accompany deployment, family life, trauma exposure, and the transition to civilian life.
Dr. Merkel is a yoga instructor in training and draws on principles of self-regulation and stress tolerance in his clinical work. He recently relocated from Buffalo, New York, and is building his practice in Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley.
