    Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

An Alternative Mental Health Treatment That Works

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a medication-free, non-invasive procedure that stimulates the neurons in the brain regions involved in mood regulation and depression. It uses similar technology as MRI machines, but instead it uses electromagnetic pulses to activate these areas of the brain that have altered neuronal activity during depression, anxiety or other mental health symptoms.

Mind Study Center is proud to offer TMS therapy as an evidenced-based treatment that is FDA approved for depression, anxiety, OCD, and smoking cessation. It is also used off-label to treat many other mental health conditions.

Here at Mind Study Center, we are committed to personalized and targeted psychiatric care, and acknowledge that many of our patients do not benefit from traditional psychiatric care such as medications or psychotherapy, and instead they can benefit from this safe and very effective treatment option.

TMS therapy is a non-invasive procedure that is FDA cleared to treat mental health conditions such as depression, OCD, smoking cessation, and anxiety symptoms associated with depression, but also used off-label for many other mental health conditions. TMS treatments conducted at Mind Study Center are safe, non-invasive and proven effective. TMS has been found to be successful in patients that have not benefited from their current treatment plan such as medication.

    Patient Testimonial

TMS is a safe procedure performed here in the office at Mind Study Center, which does not involve the use of sedation or anesthesia. TMS at our Center is unique since it is conducted directly under psychiatrists supervision, rather than by trained technicians. Due to our physicians' understanding of neuroscience and your particular condition, this allows us to personalize your treatment, as well as maximize efficacy and safety.

At the Mind Study Center, we have also been able to combine TMS and psychotherapy as studies have shown greater response in treatment when TMS is combined with psychotherapy simultaneously. Psychotherapy can activate circuits in the brain involved in depression or OCD to facilitate and enhance response to TMS treatment.

    Treatment Process

During a TMS treatment session, the patient will be comfortably seated in a chair and will remain awake. The TMS coil will be placed over the patient's head in a direction that will send magnetic pulses that are pointed to a specific region of the brain responsible for mood regulation.

The transcranial magnetic stimulation equipment will be placed over the patients head in a direction that will send magnetic pulses primarily to the area of the brain called the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. The magnetic fields produced by the magnetic coil are pointed to a specific region of the brain that scientists believe are responsible for causing clinical depression and other mental health conditions.

The initial visit will be scheduled as a longer appointment which will consist of an extensive patient questionnaire along with brain mapping and motor threshold determination. Brain mapping and motor threshold determination are specific to each individual and will be used to determine the course of treatment for each patient.

One of our admin will guide you to the treatment room, where they will make sure you are situated comfortably for when one of our TMS clinicians will then come in to commence the treatment (click here to meet the clinicians facillating TMS sessions).

Following the initial visit of brain mapping and motor threshold determination, the patient will begin the course of treatment. These visits will be scheduled for 1 hour. Patients will always undergo followup questions before commencing treatment to record any significant changes.
TMS is an FDA approved treatment for depression, OCD, smoking cessation, anxiety symptoms associated with depression, but also used for many other mental health conditions including PTSD and bipolar depression. Over the past 30 years, TMS has been transformed from research to a novel and revolutionary therapeutic tool that is making a huge impact on mental health conditions, especially for those who have not fully benefited from other interventions such as medications or psychotherapy alone.

Mind Study Center offers TMS therapy as an alternative treatment to people with the following mental health conditions:

    Anxiety

Anxiety is a common disorder that is identified by frequent experience of intense, excessive and persistent worry about day-to-day life situations causing notable distress or impairment. Often worried thoughts feel out of control or unmanageable and are disproportionate to the situation or event.

    Depression

Depression is a common mental health concern that can influence the way you see and experience yourself and the world. People who are experiencing an episode of depression often note decreased enjoyment of activities, changes in sleep patterns, changes in appetite, and feelings of worthlessness or hopelessness

    Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or commonly known as OCD, is a chronic disorder that is attributed to a pattern of uncontrollable and unwanted thoughts and obsessions that lead to repetitive behaviors or compulsions. These repetitive behaviors and obsessions become part of a person's daily life that can cause distress.

    What is TMS?

+Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a medication-free, non-invasive procedure that stimulates the neurons in the brain regions involved in mood regulation and depression. It uses electromagnetic pulses to activate the areas of the brain that have altered neuronal activity during depression, anxiety or other mental health symptoms.

    What does TMS treat?

+TMS is an FDA approved treatment for depression, OCD, smoking cessation, anxiety symptoms associated with depression, but also used for many other mental health conditions including PTSD and bipolar depression.

    Is TMS safe?

+Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is very safe. The side effects profile of TMS is found to be safer than other antidepressants. The potential side effects found in patients are mild headaches, scalp discomfort, and lightheadedness. These side effects typically subside over time during the course of treatment.

    Does it hurt?

+Patients do feel the magnetic pulses, which during the first few treatments may feel uncomfortable, but subsides as treatment progresses. During treatment, patients do feel a unique sensation of "tapping" or "woodpecker pecking" on their heads but are able to still relax during the session.
