How to Have a Stress-Free (or as stress-free as possible) Spring Break

As spring break is rapidly approaching, many of us are planning vacations with our family. Traveling with family has many mental health benefits, including creating memories and bonding. Although changing our routine can bring freedom and relaxation, it can also bring stress. Here are some tips to make your next vacation as stress-free as possible.

Involve all Members in Planning

Try to have multiple family meetings to plan your next vacation. Discuss previous vacations while eating dinner. Reflect on what went well, what various family members enjoyed, and what they wished could have gone differently. This insightful discussion can guide your future planning. Encourage everyone to name their most desired activity but be careful not to overplan. Try to have your itinerary be a balance of adventure, relaxation, family time, and alone time.

Plan for the Unexpected

No matter how much you plan ahead, something unexpected will happen. Flights could be delayed, and pools could be closed for maintenance. Try to have a positive mindset and consider the unexpected an adventure. Bring books and card games for delays (a favorite in our family is Phase 10). Handling something unexpected could also be a time for family bonding, so encourage everyone to discuss the issue and come up with a solution.

Prioritize Physical and Mental Health

With changing routines, new foods, and sleep deprivation, someone is likely to get sick. Bring over-the-counter medications with you to avoid one less trip to the store. Set alarms on your cell phones to avoid missing a prescription medication dose. Continue to have family dinners and discussions during your vacation. Ask everyone how their day went and how they are feeling and adjust your plans for the next day as needed. And make sleep a priority. It may be tempting to stay up late the first night of vacation to get in one more round of bowling, but remember, a good night’s sleep is crucial for a successful and an enjoyable vacation.

Have Fun!

Having fun releases dopamine, a “feel good” neurotransmitter in our brain. Experiencing joy as a family helps you connect with each other and reinforces the desire to repeat enjoyable things so you can continue to have fun together once you return from vacation. Find time to laugh and be silly together, your family will continue to reap the benefits for a long time!

Planning for a vacation can be stressful but planning together as a family can be a joyous experience. It ensures that everyone’s interests are considered, and everyone feels heard. However, even with the best of planning, unexpected things can still happen on vacation. Try to have an open mind and turn this unexpected twist into an adventure. Make sure to prioritize your physical and mental health on vacation. Bring your prescription and over-the-counter medications with you and take the time to check in with everyone throughout the trip. Don’t neglect your sleep schedule and use your vacation as a time to relax and find adventure. Finally, Remember to enjoy each other’s company and find joy. By being silly as a family, you’re creating memories and bonding.
